This is a beautiful low D made from a gorgeous piece of Stabilized Box Elder Wood with beautiful read streaky grain. I used a piece of colored laminated wood which has been dyed and stabilized for the fipple plug that I think looks fantastic. The sound is superb clean and pure with just a bit of chiff and woodiness to the sound. Really one of the best sounding low D whistles I’ve heard.
The last photo is with a flashlight shining inside so you can see how the red part of the wood is translucent as it took up a lot of the stabilizing resin. Box elder is a light porous wood, so when it is stabilized it becomes far more dense and hard and retains more resin than many other woods. Makes for a great solid low D whistle for sure!
what is stabilized wood?
So getting this wood ready is a complicated process. First we start with completely dry wood which we place inside a vacuum chamber soaking in a special resin. The vacuum is left on for 24 hours to pull all the air out of the wood. Then we release the vacuum and let it soak in the resin for 24-48 hours. The wood is them removed from the chamber and baked for 3-6 hours on low heat to cure the resin. The result is very dense and hard wood that is nearly impervious to moisture and temperature changes.
The signature series whistles are each individual works of art. Great attention to detail goes into making each one play and sound great and look and feel great as well.
This Wooden Whistle has a silky smooth finish. The wood was sanded all the way to a 3000 grit sand paper. Every corner is silky smooth. The body has been finished inside and out with a combination polish of beeswax, Carnauba wax, and walnut oil to protect and polish the wood and maintain a chemical free food grade finish.
