    Description

    Here is a very rare old Smithfield NC Pottery Blue Flambe vase in the form of a flower pot. It would have been made at Herman Cole's "Hillside" Pottery shop in the 1920's, and likely turned by Charlie or Farrell Craven. Cole had to change the shop name from Hillside to Smithfield after being threatened with legal action by a NJ shop with a very similar name, but either name is accepted in the trade. Herman employed several turning potters to work at the wheel, and it's been said that he preferred working in the glaze house whenever possible. This pot has a factory drilled hole in the bottom, and probably had an under plate originally. Those things NEVER survive. I have personally viewed the largest collection of Smithfield pottery known some years back, and this piece did in fact come out of that collection. It is the only known example found to date. It measures 6" tall by 8" wide at the rim. It is free of any serious damages, but I do recall a small flake on the rim. Smithfield glazes were, in general. very sturdy, but their flambe and chrome reds are prone to minor flakes.Vase ships USPS Priority Insured Mail!
