"Tea for Two"
teapot + 2 matching cups
A
"Tea for Two"
set including a covered teapot plus two matching can-type cups. Produced in 2011 by Pottery and Mixed Media artist Julie Olson at White Oak Pottery in Durham, NC
All pieces are marked with the impressed
J
mark near the bottom of the handle, as expected from Julie Olson pottery works. (see our last photo with the artist mark highlighted on one of the tea cups.)
The Measurements
The main body of the tea pot is 3" tall (and a total of approx. 4" including the lid.) The spout is rather long at 2". The bottom is 5" across, and the belly is 15" around. I've never used it to serve tea, so I'm assuming it will hold 3 to 4 servings in the cups.
The cups are "can shaped" and are 2" tall, 3.25" across, and 10.5" around.
Attached handles to all three pieces. The handle on the teapot is the perfect angle for serving a hot beverage and not spilling it in your lap (or your guest's lap!) The handles on the teacups are good for holding either the "American Guy" position (hook your index finger through and hold on) or the "Royals" way (grasp the handle on each side with thumb and forefinger, then support the bottom of the cup with your middle finger.)
The Glaze
This set is in a very nice dark reddish brown that I would call
"chocolate covered cherry."
It's not quite burgundy, and it has more red in it than plain brown. All three pieces have a design of pinkish-white dots placed symmetrically around the piece, with the handles being blank on the cups. The handle, spout, and the finial on the lid are also plain.
Plus
, if you see our pictures of the bottoms, you see that each piece has a circle of bisque for the foot of the piece, and then the entire center has the same design as the sides. The interior of all the pieces does not have the dots.
I don't see a lot of
Julie Olson
pieces that have this bright shiny glaze used here. Her current work is more of a semi-gloss / semi-mat alkaline glaze. I love this set for the uniqueness of the glaze she used, and also the very close attention to the decoration. Even though it's all food-safe, this is a beautiful display piece, and it's been on display here for many years. It's time for this unique piece of North Carolina pottery art to move to its next home (and I'll likely buy more Julie Olson! She's a favorite!)
The Provenance
I purchased the tea set new in 2011 at a fund raising auction for the
North Carolina Pottery Center
in Seagrove, NC. I am donating again to the pottery center with this sale: a portion of the sale price will be donated through eBay Charity Giving.
Because I want to raise as much money as possible with this sale, I will not be offering Best Offer, and I will not be accepting returns (that would be not very nice, to donate money to them and then have to take it back.)
For shipping, this piece will be double-boxed with the tea pot in one box and the cups in another, to make sure that nothing gets damaged in shipment.
